Ryder learns what he is … and what the Dantons are up to.
Feigian Chong & Sansan Saw of Sixth Creation
While I’ve been loving this series, I do have to admit this issue had a few stumbles. There’s so much back story and exposition that it kind of bogs the story down in several places, although I admit it does pick up in time for an ending that just makes you go “eww”.
After last issue’s revelation, Ryder now knows he isn’t exactly human. But what is he? That’s an easy guess, but Monk gets him up to speed, and it turns out they have more of a history together than he ever realized. Oh, and he has a brother.
While Ryder digests this, he learns about the secrets of Monk’s Daemon killing bullets, and they uncover what the Dantons are up to. It ties into the past, when the Daemons had “drone” enforcers to keep humans subjugated, until the drones died off. When you learn about something this significant, you know it’s going to play a part in the overall plot, and it does. In the meantime, Ryder has kinky sex with a couple of women, and learns more about his daemon nature. And then the end gives us a major Freudian twist.
The art is smooth and solid, especially in the action sequences, of which there are quite a few. The flashbacks are also very well done.
A good issue, but so much exposition is bound to weigh down the forward momentum. Still, the ending should be a punch in the face. (I mean that in a good way.)
